A DaVinci Resolve PowerGrade that drops a single control point onto the Custom Curves at the exact position of 18% middle gray in DaVinci Wide Gamut / Intermediate. It sits on the identity diagonal, so it changes nothing on its own — it gives you a fixed mid-gray pivot to shape contrast around, instead of guessing where the middle of the curve is and watching your exposure drift.
When you steepen the Custom Curve to add contrast, the curve pivots around some point — and every tone except that point moves. If you don't choose the pivot, it lands wherever the curve happens to be steepest, and your middle gray — faces, skin, the exposure you set — slides brighter or darker as a side effect. Here is the same contrast move pivoted two ways:
Mid-gray was at code 344. After the contrast, it lands at code 260 — the whole image reads darker, and you chase it back with exposure, undoing half the contrast.
The anchor is exactly on the diagonal: input 0.336 → output 0.336, code 344, unchanged. Shadows deepen and highlights lift around it. Your exposure never moved.
Same contrast strength in both panels — only the pivot changed. The anchor doesn't add contrast; it decides what your contrast rotates around.
DaVinci Wide Gamut / Intermediate is a log-shaped working space. 18% scene-linear gray doesn't land at 0.5 on the curve — it encodes to 0.336 (about 10-bit code 344), a third of the way up, not the middle. Eyeball the curve's centre and you're pivoting a full stop above your real mid-gray. The exact value is easy to miss and impossible to place by hand.
It's the reference the whole exposure hangs on — where a gray card reads, where faces roughly sit. Contrast should bloom outward from it, not shove it around. Pin it and every contrast move becomes a clean decision: how much to deepen shadows, how much to lift highlights — with the anchor held.
0.336 is the encoded position of 18% gray in DWG/Intermediate specifically. The number depends entirely on the transfer function — it's different in Rec.709, in ACEScct, in Log-C. Use this anchor only where the node receives DWG/Intermediate data, so the point lines up with the gray it's named for.
No Studio feature, no plugin, no baked-in look — one control point on the stock Custom Curves you already have. It ships on the identity diagonal, so it's a labelled reference that does nothing until you choose to shape around it. Show-your-work, like the rest of control-z.
Round-trip tested in DaVinci Resolve 21.0.0 build 48. The grade uses only standard Custom Curves controls — nothing Studio-only.
The one rule: keep the anchor on the diagonal. The moment you drag it off, mid-gray is no longer pinned — which is sometimes exactly what you want (a deliberate exposure move), but now it's a decision you made, not a side effect of adding contrast. That's the whole point: the drift becomes a choice.
Most grading tools give you a look. This one gives you a datum — a fixed thing to measure from. Resolve's Contrast palette has a Pivot control for exactly this reason, but the Custom Curves, where the real shaping happens, leave you without a labelled mid-gray. So you pivot by feel, and middle gray becomes whatever falls out of the curve rather than a number you set on purpose.
This PowerGrade is the smallest possible fix: put the datum where it belongs, once, exactly, and get out of the way. It pairs naturally with the node tree — drop it in the Contrast stage and every contrast decision downstream starts from a mid-gray that won't move. Clean structure, honest tools, and one point of ground truth to build on.
