Turn a matte into finished work.

Ten paste-ready Fusion setups for the free edition of DaVinci Resolve. Five run on a Depth matte, four on a Stencil matte, one reads Hush's clean-confidence alpha. One paste each, wire the two inputs the sticky note names, and you're done.

Paste-tested in a live Fusion comp on free-edition tools (DaVinci Resolve 21). Every one pastes without error and produces the effect on real footage — screenshots below are real renders, not mockups.

how to use them

One paste, two wires.

  1. Make a matte for your clip. A depth matte: depth-cli run scene.mov. A subject matte: stencil-cli run scene.mov --prompts points.json. Or drop the clip on Depth / Stencil in the Suite app. You get a matte clip beside your footage.
  2. Open a .setting from the pack in any text editor, select all, copy.
  3. Paste into Fusion. On Resolve's Fusion page, click empty node-graph space and paste. The whole setup lands, sticky note and all — no errors.
  4. Wire the two inputs exactly as the yellow sticky note says. It names every wire in plain language: your image into one node, the matte into another. That's it.

Prefer the command line? depth-cli templates -o ~/Documents/control-z-templates drops all ten into a folder (--pack depth or --pack stencil for one set). Built from stock nodes — nothing here needs Studio. Every value is a starting point, meant to be moved.

Depth-shaped atmosphere. The far end of the shot mists first while the foreground stays clean — real aerial haze, keyed off distance.

rack focus

A focus pull you didn't shoot. Sharp at a focal plane you choose, defocusing with distance — animate the plane to rack between subjects.

depth grade

Three depth bands — near, mid, far — each with its own colour node, and no roto. Warm the foreground, cool the distance, separate a subject from its sky.

Grade in the three neutral correctors CZGradeNear / Mid / Far; each only touches its band.

A push-in with real depth for lockoffs and stills — the background drifts against the foreground instead of scaling flat.

haze light

Depth-weighted glow — the far side of the shot blooms like light through haze. The honest "relight-ish": a gradient, not true normals, and it says so.

veil blur ★ THE ONE TO GRAB

Privacy blur — or mosaic — inside a tracked matte, with a grow/feather so edges don't leak. The journalist tool: hide a face, a plate, a screen, and nothing else.

Mosaic instead of blur: set CZVeilMosaic.Blend to 1 (see below). Edge grow/feather on the mask.

This blurs where the matte says — check every frame before you publish. Stencil's confidence strip tells you where to look.

The same template, bypassed by default: flip one value and the blur becomes a hard mosaic. Built from Scale nodes so the blocks stay crisp.

cutout

Composite a Stencil ProRes 4444 (RGB + alpha) over a new background — a colour, or other footage. Tune the alpha rather than trust it.

The MatteControl gives you matte blur / contract-expand / invert on the alpha.

matte tune

Grow / shrink / feather / despeckle any matte — Stencil, Depth, or Hush's confidence matte — and actually look at it. The QC bench the other templates assume you have.

View CZTuneFeather for the matte alone, CZTuneView for it as a red tint over the shot. All controls start neutral.

social vertical

9:16 with a blurred backdrop — the most-shipped social format. The frame is scaled and blurred to fill behind, with the real image full-width on top, on a 1080×1920 canvas.

Pairs with Pivot (which picks the crop for you) but works standalone. Reframe the top image with CZFit.

Grain only where Hush actually cleaned. Hush ≥ 3.7 can write its clean-confidence matte into the output alpha; this lays grain back over exactly those areas, so the denoiser's flattest patches get texture and the rest is left alone.

One wire — the mask reads the alpha. Amount on CZGrainMerge.Blend, size on CZGrain.XScale.

The better path is Speak, which regrains in density, not on the output — this is the free-Fusion echo for when Speak isn't installed.
